Independence Monument

History:

The Monument of Independence is a monument in Vlorë, Albania, dedicated to the Albanian Declaration of Independence and worked by Albanian sculptors, Muntaz Dhrami and Kristaq Rama. It is found in the Flag’s Plaza, near the building where the first Albanian government worked in 1913.

In the center of the monument is the sculpture of Ismail Qemali, the leader of the Albanian national movement and founder of Independent Albania.

The Independence Monument in the city of Vlorë was erected to commemorate the emergence of an independent Albanian state in 1912. It depicts the figure of Ismail Qemal, the leader of the independence movement, standing on a pedestal. At the bottom of the monument are figures who also contributed to the creation of Albania.

The monument was built after World War II. The author of the project were court sculptors of the then authorities, Muntaz Dharmi and Kristaq Rama. The latter also designed the well-known monument of Mother Albania. A sculpture in the style of socialist realism Ismail Quemal holding the Albanian flag stands on a rectangular pedestal. The figures of his companions and people who were active in the national movement were carved below.
