Bunkart 2

History:

The Bunk’Art 2 at the Interior Ministry in Tirana occupies an area of 1,000 square meters and consists of 40 rooms, which present history from 1912 to 1991 through facts obtained by the State Archive and the Interior Ministry. From room to room, history unfolds from the creation of the first Gendarmerie, the Gendarmerie of the Zogist Kingdom, the People’s Police, to travel with barbed wire camps, to prisons, internments and expulsions. A separate room is also dedicated to the way foreigners were listened to, which were in our country during the period of dication.

An excellent re-imagining of a Communist-era nuclear bunker, Bunk’Art 2 museum and art space reflects Tirana’s initiative to use culture to celebrate the birth of a new era, whilst remembering its solemn past. The unearthing of this underground tunnel in the center of Tirana, echoes the uncovering of ancient ruins in any of the world’s most fascinating historical cities. Each discovery like this breathes new life into a city, recalling times past – marking the end of one era, and the beginning of a new. Bunk’Art 2, at approximately 1000 m2 in size, is the second of two nuclear bunkers in Tirana that has recently transformed into an interactive artistic space.
