St. George Monastery

Description:

The saint monastery contains a reconstructed 14th C church inside the ruins of a monastic compound. The church is a typical single nave Byzantine type church with a complex cross domed cupola support structure. The site of the structures on the top of Monastery Hill affords magnificent views west to the Ionian sea and east across the Butrint Lake. The larger site includes prehistoric remains of the Deme Fortification Wall . Entrance to the site may be arranged by calling DRKK-Sarande.

In the center of the monastery is the church of Saint George, which is a reconstruction of the 19th century, surrounded by a series of auxiliary premises. The church has a long narthex leading to the nave, above which rises a dome, while to the east it is bounded by a wall iconostasis that separates it from the altar. Its interior walls are decorated with wall paintings, where three levels of painting can be seen that are superimposed on each other.

From the top of the hill where the monastery is located, you can enjoy a stunning view of the Ionian Sea and Lake Butrint. This is an important pilgrimage destination but also for all those who prefer mountain climbing and nature walks.

Saint George’s Monastery is a category I cultural monument and is part of the fortified monasteries, with walls equipped with towers and turrets.
