Gjin Aleksi Mosque

History:

Gjin Aleksi Mosque (Albanian: Xhamia e Gjin Aleksit, TurkishKinaleksi Mescidi) is a 15th-century mosque in the village of Rusan, near DelvinëAlbania. It is a Cultural Monument of Albania. The mosque is distinguished for the high quality of acoustics that is obtained through casks that are strategically placed in holes in the walls.

The Gjin Aleksi Mosque is a gem of architecture but also of our cultural heritage, in terms of style, cultural layers, wall paintings and its history – a true testimony of the cultural and religious coexistence of Albanians.

It is located in the Rusan village of Delvina and was built around the 1600s on the ruins of a Byzantine-style monastery.

The object is a cultural monument of the first category. It is one of the objects that contains an interweaving of cultures from the local one, to the post-Byzantine one, to the Ottoman one. This mosque has been famous for its special acoustics.
