History:
St. Nicholas’ Church (Albanian: Kisha e Shën Kollit) is a church in Shelcan, Elbasan County, Albania. Its interior is completely covered with frescoes by Onufri. It became a Cultural Monument of Albania in 1948. it looks more like a house than as a church. However, once inside there is no doubt that this is an orthodox church, as it is covered with frescoes made by Onufri, the most famous Albanian fresco painter, living in the 16th century. The fresco’s are well preserved, and somehow the church escaped the notice of the communist and their destructive drive.
There are 4 rows of fresco’s, the lower two are saints, the upper part are scenes from the life of Christ. Above the entrance door is the assumption of St Mary, while near the altar, the east, there is a Mary and child. This set-up can be seen in all the old Orthodox churches in Albania. When you arrive, there sure will be someone coming with the key to open up.
