Hotel “Vollga” from which the promenade got its name, in addition to its symbolic value for the city of Durrës, also has important values for the history of Albanian cinematography.
The first anti-fascist resistance took place on April 7, 1939, exactly where the “Vollga” hotel is located today.
The history of the construction of the former “Volga” hotel begins in 1938, which was originally intended to serve as the headquarters of the Italian Navy Command. But after the invasion of Albania, the Italians decided to turn it into a luxury hotel, naming it “Hotel dei Dogi” on April 21, 1940.
With the capitulation of Italy and the occupation of Albania by Germany, “Hotel dei Dogi” was taken over by the Germans and its name was changed to “Majestic”.
After the liberation of Albania, the communists changed its name again and named it “Volga” because of its proximity to the Soviet Union.
From 1949 to 1990, hotel “Vollga” has been one of the most favorite areas for vacationers in the city of Durrës.
